Cladonia staufferi Abbayes

  Basal squamules persistent, conspicuous, 2–4 mm long, 1–2 mm diam., rounded, minutely lobed, with subcrenate margins, esorediate. Podetia growing from basal squamules, 1–3 cm tall, 0.5–1, rarely to 2 mm diam.; cortex areolate, becoming granular to warted, esorediate, esquamulose or with squamules on podetial stalk or on margins of scyphi; scyphi broad, 2–5, rarely to 8 mm diam., simple, or with short, narrow, marginal or lateral, or central scyphi. Apothecia marginal on scyphi, 1–2 mm diam., convex, dark brown. Pycnidia marginal on scyphi, 0.2 mm diam., subglobose, black. CHEMISTRY: K-, KC- or KC+ yellow, P+ strong yellow. Psoromic (major) and conpsoromic (minor) acids, ±usnic acid (minor).
     
  Occurs in N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.; grows on soil.
